Optical Spectroscopy Scientist / Engineer – Bioanalytical Instrument Development

Job Summary:

OptiComp Corporation is currently seeking an innovative, motivated, goal-oriented Optical Spectroscopy Engineer to help develop a miniaturized, spectrofluorometric instrument for multi-purpose applications in areas including biomedical diagnostics, biodefense, homeland security and environmental monitoring. The position will entail combining principles and advanced techniques of optical spectroscopy and nanotechnology with leveraging aspects of the company’s optoelectronics technology and capabilities toward the development of an operating prototype for multi-analyte immunodiagnostic testing at the point-of-care. Salary will be dependent on level of education as well as years and degree of related experience. It is preferred that the candidate have at least a minimum two years of R&D experience in private industry.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Conduct both independent laboratory and literature research, as well as work cross-functionally with engineering, R&D and the program director.
  • Contribute innovative concepts, designs and their laboratory implementation that lead to the successful development and marketability of a near-commercialization prototype built within the framework of meeting quality assurance metrics and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in the daily management and inventory of the Biophotonics lab and maintenance of its equipment operation.
  • Periodic presentation of written and oral project progress reports.
  • Participate in authorship of grant/contract proposals, publications, intellectual property and conference presentations.

Experience & Qualifications:


  • A science degree (BS/MS/PhD) in a related area such as Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Biophotonics or Analytical Chemistry with emphasis on technologies employing optical physics, optoelectronics, biosensors or optical spectroscopy based biosample analyses.
  • Commanding knowledge and hands-on experience in applied optics preferred, with emphases on optical bench design and performance optimization in the development of fully integrated spectrophotometric instrumentation based on advanced optical spectroscopy and optoelectronics principles and techniques, preferably in applications using quantitative photoluminescence detection.
  • A plus (but not mandatory) would be to have a fundamental background and some laboratory experience in any of the following: molecular biology, immunoassay development, nanoparticle taggant technology or microfluidics.
  • Must have an active hands-on approach to applied technology development, with a strong desire to collaborate in helping successfully achieve bringing cutting-edge and multidisciplinary projects from concept to product commercialization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work with limited supervision as well as part of a multidisciplinary and collaborative effort.
